After years of success, a familiar face in tennis coaching shares personal struggles with burnout and seeks meaningful connections with his audience.

I want to take a moment to address something that’s been weighing heavily on me: I’ve been feeling burnt out, and it's finally time to speak up about it aloud.

This isn’t just a fleeting feeling—it's a culmination of experiences that have left me feeling isolated and stuck. Many of you have journeyed with me for over 16 years, and I owe it to you to be transparent about my current state of mind.

A Look Back on My Journey

My venture into tennis coaching took off in 2009, armed with nothing but a camera and a microphone. The transformation began when I left my club coaching role in 2011, finally discovering a sustainable path forward. By 2014, I was eager to expand our reach and build a dedicated team.

Fast forward to 2019, and we thrived with a diverse team of coaches, editors, and tech support, all committed to reshaping tennis coaching. We were making real strides, connecting and growing our community. But since that peak, a slow decline has left me feeling reminiscent of those early days in my home studio, just me again, speaking into a camera.

The Weight of Loneliness

This shift back to solitude has taken a toll. I miss the camaraderie, the buzzing office atmosphere, and working collaboratively on our projects. Our private court, bustling with energy and ideas, is now a fading memory, and reconciling with that loss has been challenging.

I had grand plans for scaling our operations—visions of growth that now feel out of reach. This creeping loneliness has stifled my creativity and motivation, reflected in my recent content. With over 2,000 videos produced, I found myself reluctant to create the next version of the same instructional video. I turned to sharing student success stories because they were simpler to produce and easier to connect with. Yet, this approach inadvertently created distance between us.

Reflecting on My Experience

It’s essential for me to clarify that I don’t blame anyone but myself for where I’ve landed. The highs and lows over the past 16 years have been profound, filled with valuable lessons about leadership, community, and building something meaningful. I’ve cherished every moment of this journey, despite the current feeling of stagnation.

Even while recording this message in a space I built from the ground up, I recognize that none of it would be possible without your engagement. Every click, comment, and interaction matters deeply—it fuels the passion behind my work.

Shifting Towards Authentic Engagement

I want to address a reality: I don’t want to continue just going through the motions. I don’t want you to feel that either. I acknowledge that the past few months may have lacked the vibrancy and insights you’ve come to expect.

Going forward, I intend to pivot the focus of my videos. I want them to feel like genuine dialogues rather than monologues. It’s not about me lecturing as a so-called expert; it’s about fostering a two-way conversation where your voice is heard.

I want to create content that meets your needs, not just filling the void for the sake of keeping up appearances. So I’m reaching out to you: What do you need right now to enhance your tennis journey? Your feedback will shape what comes next.

Moving Forward Together

I’m grateful for your patience and support during this period of stagnation. I value every contribution you’ve made to this community—it’s allowed not just me, but everyone involved to pursue their passions.

As I navigate this stage of my professional life, I’m optimistic about the future. Your thoughts and experiences matter more than ever. Please share your story—let's work together to reignite the spark in this community.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I’m eager to see where we can go from here.

Your Coach,
-Ian
